Afghanistan -- The Landscape
During the year I spent in Afghanistan, I had considerable opportunity to travel throughout the northern part of the country. It is not the mountainous wasteland I was expecting. Certainly the mountains are there, but in between the mountains are valleys with numerous rivers, fertile floodplains planted with wheat, rice and cotton, and innumerable small villages. While not currently self-sufficient in food production, the potential exists for the country to become self-sufficient. Much could be done to improve agricultural technology, but progress will depend on strengthening the Ministry of Agriculture and agricultural university system.
