Ethiopia / lower Omo region
Gado and Dunga
In 2004, after teaching a workshop on international sanitary and phytosanitary regulation in Addis Ababa, a friend and I hired a car and driver and spent a week traveling in the lower Omo region, visiting with the Mursi, Hamer, and Surma tribes. One day, after setting up our campsite along a river, I wandered off and soon found a small Hamer village. I was invited in and spent the afternoon as the guest of Gado and Dunga and their extended family. Their home, a small round hut of wood branches with a thatch roof, was filled with women and children. They were as open and friendly as anyone could be, and not at all shy about my taking pictures. It was an unforgettable experience. I hope to go back there someday.
