The Somewhere Over the Rainbow trip is usually in late April and explores several canyons on the western side of the Rainbow Plateau. The trip is in an extremely remote and inaccessible area --truly a desert wilderness-- and unlike officially designated federal "wilderness areas", there are no trails and no other people. In perhaps 15 backpack trips here, I have never met other backpackers. One of the trip's many highlights is backpacking up through the narrows of West Canyon. In places, the canyon is only shoulder wide and hundreds of feet deep.
The 2014 trip is now completed; the 2015 trip will be April 18-25 and announced on the Sierra Club National Outings website in November.
